Turn off Ads in Gmail Account

You may find Google sponsored links everywhere on web. Gmail also displays sponsored links aka web clips at top in email accounts. If you are annoyed with these targeted ads popping every now and then in your Gmail account, you can turn them off. Here is a little tip that will help you do this.

To turn off these ads,

Open your Gmail account.
Click on “Settings” at top right corner.
Select “Web Clips” tab.
Uncheck the “Show my web clips above the Inbox” check box there. That’s it. You’ll not show any ads from now on.

This little trick turns off ads displayed at top of the mailbox. However, you will also find ads at the right side of your mail content. Thanks David for pointing this out. This another tip targets those ads. For this trick to work, all you need is a Mozilla Firefox browser and a GreaseMonkey script. Follow these simple steps to remove those annoying ads.

Start Mozilla Firefox and install GreaseMonkey add-on from here if you haven’t already.
Now, install “Gmail Without Ads” GreaseMonkey script from here.
Just activate that script and you are all set to go.
Login to your Gmail account and enjoy the neat look of your mailbox.

You can always restore these settings when you like to display these ads again. But hey, who wants them anyway?

Google Searchology: More Options in Google Search

Google has rolled out some really cool features with Google Search. They are now offering real time search (competing Twitter, Google?), Search Options, Wonder wheel and many more. Calling this as event Searchology, Google want people to get more sophisticated at search to solve more complex problems.

Google’s Vice President of Search and User Experience Marissa Mayer called this improvement as a way to organize ‘universal search results’ that Google introduced two years ago. To start with, Google search result displays “Show options…” link at the top of the results. Just click on that to see available options. There you can filter your results in forums, videos and reviews.

Next up are options to display search results according to content recency and then comes Wonder wheel, a cool way to visually search Google. It displays related keywords around your search topic and lets you further narrow down results visually. And there is Time line to help you track the evolvement of the topic you are looking for. SUMO Paint is a free online image editing tool which can do all the editing operations you are looking for. This browser based software is built on Flash and is light weight. So, it doesn’t take much to load. Also, it is deep linked like plain HTML sites. Gmail Now with Multiple Inboxes

Looks like Gmail is leading an innovation race between free webmail service providers. Take a look at their recently added features and you’ll really find this true. They’ve come up with Filters, Labels, offline mail and now it’s Multiple Inboxes.

As the name suggest, this Lab feature adds more than one instances of inbox in a single default Gmail view. You can view for example your default inbox, Drafts, Starred mails in a single page. So, no need to juggle through all the labels you’ve created, your drafts etc each time by clicking on their links. It increases productivity in a simple yet innovative way.

You can turn on this feature from “Labs” tab of your Gmail settings. You can add up to 5 panes in a single view and can place them at right, above or below your default inbox. Personally I like to place it below the inbox. To configure the panes, just head on to “Multiple Inboxes” tab of your Gmail Settings page.

See Your Friends in Real Time with Google Latitude

Google has rolled out a new tool for its Mobile services by which you can see your friend’s location in real time with your Mobile phone or PC. It’s called Google Latitude. With it, you and your friends can share locations, share status and can contact one another.

The tool is available with latest Google maps download. It can also be downloaded to your phone directly by visiting google.com/latitude from your phone. To use it on your PC, there is no other option than to add Latitude to iGoogle. As mentioned previously, it starts location sharing upon approval of you and your pal. After that you can share your status. It directly syncs with GTalk also. So, you can contact your friend by IM, SMS or a phone call.

Concerned about privacy? No worries, you can easily hide your location or turn off Google Latitude in Maps. The tool currently works with Android, Windows Mobile 5.0+, most BlackBerry devices, Symbian S60 phones. They are going to add support for iPhone and some Java phones too soon.
