2 May 2009 2 Comments

KDE (K Desktop Environment) project provides Desktop Environments for Unix based systems. It is also one of the most popular Desktop Environments other than GNOME out there and so is there applications. However if you think that these applications can run on Linux only, think again. Because they’ve made available an ambitious project called “KDE on Windows”, which lets users run KDE applications on Windows platform.

Windows and LinuxKDE applications such as Amarok, Kate, Kontact, Konqueror, Koffice etc are free. So, users don’t have to pay hefty charges for commercial software available and still can get most of the features of those software freely. All you have to do is just download and install KDE for Windows installer. The installation process is simple itself. It will first ask you type of installation(from internet or local directory), installation directory, install mode(End user or Package Manager), download path and then you can select packages to install. See the KDE-Installer Screenshots for a quick installer overview.

KDE for Windows currently supports Windows 2000, XP, 2003 and Vista. However, it’s not in final state yet. So, you may experience some hiccups  while using applications. Meanwhile you can contribute to development of this project and other KDE applications. You can visit their official site to know more about this.
